One of the most rewarding experiences I had as an FIU student was giving back to my home country of Colombia.
During my time as a member and President of PorColombia FIU I had the incredible
opportunity to partake in two of ColFuture's annual mission trips
As ColFuture’s mission states, the aim of these trips is to raise education awareness
for children who have been victims of violence and poverty all throughout Colombia.
In December 2013, I had the chance to make an impact in the lives of over 100 children from one of Cali’s most
impoverished neighborhoods (Charco Azul, Distrito Aguablanca). In December of the following year
I had the chance to give back once again, this time in Barlovento, Barranquilla. Our one week trips began by the excitement of gathering
all the materials and donations we had collected over the last semester; boxes filled with crayons, notebooks,
markers and backpacks were the result of countless fundraisers and the incredible work of all our volunteers.
After spending a day filled with activities, dancing and singing, we gave out over 100 backpacks filled with school supplies.
Throughout these mission trips we had one thing in mind, bringing a smile to each and every one of the
children who were about to receive their school supplies, in hopes of inspiring them to
seek education as a way out of the violence and poverty that surrounds them.
Having the opportunity to actually have an impact on someone's life is the most rewarding experience anyone could ask for...
